Valentines day!!!?

Another year goes by and it is back again...the sounds of 'Love is in the air', the sounds of romantic music and video on TV, the hopeful guys yearning for their girls to show up and the hopeful girls thinking of how to react just in case it happens! But they are also ready with 'Oh no Ramu, I always thought of you just as a friend!' or even better ' I always thought of you as a brother', or even better ' Who are you!?'. The slaps can be spared for other days.

For the second class hopeful people, they are let to play with black and white. For the couples, it is a daunting question of 'Show me how much you love me'. For the rest which form the majority, it is a day to forget, cursing who this bloody Valentine ever was in the first place.

The parks would be filled with 2n people and curious onlookers outside. I guess the Cubbon park keepers would find that their count of roses in the park has gone down. At the end of the day, there is a high chance that those red roses unaware of their fate, wanting to bloom, may find themselves run over on the street.

But the hype rubs off easily. You can be met with disbelief when they hear you not doing anything 'interesting' for the day. You can easily guess where I am coming from.

Its like a day when the doors of love is open for 24 hours, when there are no thorns in those red roses, courtesy - flower sellers. They seem to be the only people who are sure to have a great day. One reason we were told why this should be Feb 14 is that children will be having their day after 9 months. Another reason which can hold true is that there are too many weddings in February and it had to be celebrated it in the middle of the month.

Far away from all this, unaware of the day's importance, a couple after toiling together in the summer heat in their land, hidingly making sure that they take more of each others' load, would have never known that love had to be expressed in three
words. Anyway, they would have a ball, i.e a ball of ragi mudde and have a sound sleep.

Why is everyone against Valentine's day?Is it supposed to be "cool" to be against this day?
Or is it some intellectual,left-brain thingie?

Well Said Vedu!,

Love is not a feeling to be expressed in one day or in only one day.. its a feeling that needs to be expressed between two hearts., People dont know the reason or significance of these days,, just blindly follow them. Rather they could dedciate their earning for the day to nation, students can dedicate the day for a social service. Atleast by this way they can be prodcuctive for the nation atleast for a day!

After reading the above comments..i am tempted to make the following observations..
1.Every time we spend,we are indirectly fuelling the nation's economy.
2.The fact that one day is not sufficient to express you deep seated love...is not at all the point here! The point is that you express your love throughout the year...and celebrate the spirit of that,on one chosen day..what's so bad about that?
3.Going by your own argument..we should not celebrate festivals like Diwali- since we didnt know Bali personally..and by celebrating Diwali..we will simply be following the mob.Secondly, why celebrate light and prosperity on one day..it should be celebrated every day..correct?

Yes,I agree that Valentine's day is overrated..but many things in life are!
And yes,it is a wicked mean plan to commercialize "love" and make money out of it...but are not our movie-makers,song-writers,painters,writers all guilty of the same crime?
Love makes the world go round..and love sells..bigtime!
People who are against Valentine's day are no better than those who exchange pink baloons with crappy lined cards on that day!!
Vedu,Your write-up is excellent..I am venting my irritation against the hoopla made agst a simple celebration.

Few things I want to add
1) Deepavali is celebrated everyday in our families. What else is it when we light deepas in our homes in the evenings.
2) Anything, be it movies, festivals, and the hot Valentines' day, blown out of meaning is injurious to a society and the next generation. We've got to discourage such things. And V-day hasnt remained a simple celebration anymore.
3) Love sells? Gives me shivers, Where are we going!

Marketing is nothing but trying to tap into the inner yearnings of the customer's heart...
When i said love sells..i meant ,as a theme...why else would you have car companies promoting ads which say..our car will add to your loving relationship?
Every third ad made has a "love" theme to it..i did not mean it in any crude way...I am sorry if my statement hurt your sensibilities!

And since you say that you celebrate Diwali everyday, why have Diwali again in oct-nov period?

Valentine's day is celebrated in a grandiose scale...in the end it's upto the individual to decide if and how he/she wants to celebrate anything.

i strongly believe that if two mature people want a special day to be grateful for their love and companionship...they have every right to it.And if a million fools celebrate just for the heck of it..it's their headache!
And if the market tries to cash in on it,you should be wise enough not to fall for that...
I remember last night, we three frens sitting and feeling gloomy about working late on Feb 14th...but i consider it total time pass!!!
I have had arguments about this topic for the whole of last week...
pity me;)
i am goaded to write a pro-valentine's day blog:)

Liked the ending - nice imagery of a tired couple sharing a ragi mudde with love.
